Fargo Flood Insurance
What You Should Know About Flood Insurance & Remapping
In July 2012, FEMA submitted the preliminary floodplain map to the City of Fargo for review. The review and comment period for the revised map is expected to last approximately 12 months from the date the City received it. After the review and comment period, the new map is expected to become effective.
Under this new map, many properties will be added to the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), also known as the 100-year floodplain, high risk area, regulated floodplain and Zone A. Fargo homeowners who are newly mapped into this zone and who have a federally backed mortgage will be required to purchase flood insurance. For homeowners without a mortgage, flood insurance will remain optional but highly recommended.
