Thomas A. Davies, Municipal Court Judge

judgeDaviesWeb

Judge Davies was elected to the Municipal Court bench in April 1972, on his 33rd birthday. He enjoys interacting with the people he meets through Municipal Court and knowing his work makes a difference in the community.

He is proud to have implemented sentencing alternatives and programs other than fines and jail, to meet the needs of the community.

Davies believes the most challenging things about his job are:

  • educating individuals on why they are in court and how the process works.
  • explaining why the judge takes the actions he does.
  • explaining the sentence imposed.
  • having individuals leave not necessarily liking the sentence but feeling that they have been treated fairly and that their case was carefully considered.

In addition to his work as a municipal court judge, Davies maintained a private law practice after graduating from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1963, until his retirement from the practice in 2008.  He is a member of several professional organizations and has been a speaker at state and local seminars.

Davies grew up in Grand Forks and moved to Fargo in 1955 when his father was appointed a United States Federal District Judge by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  He married his high school sweetheart Maureen (Brodigan); they have four children and eight grandchildren and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversay on September 3, 2010.  The Judge enjoys relaxing with his family at his lake cottage; spending time riding his horse Rocky; watching the antics of the two family cats, Foster and Little Cat, from the humane society; tooling around on his scooter; interacting with court staff and those who appear in court --- and simply enjoying life.
