Positions Available Within the Department

Individuals hired to be sworn police officers for the Fargo Police Department begin their career as a Patrol Officer. Once sworn personal have successfully completed their probationary period, they will have the opportunity to apply for specialty and secondary positions within the department. Below is a list of these positions:

Lateral Positions:

• Narcotics/gang investigators 
• Criminal investigators
• K-9 officers
• School resource officers
• Truck regulatory officer 
• Downtown resource officers
• Traffic safety unit consisting of motorcycle officers 
• Cultural Liaison Officer

• Accident re-constructionists
• Police training officers
• Law enforcement instructors on various law enforcement topics
• SWAT team members
• Bike patrol officers
• Crime scene processing assistants
• Honor guard
• Police explorer post leader

• Intern mentors

Promotions

• 19 sergeants
• Six lieutenants
• Three deputy chiefs
• One chief
