Free compost and wood chips
Each spring and fall, the City of Fargo's recycling program offers city residents one free yard each of compost and wood chips.
Residents with bags and cans must load their own materials; city crews will help load pickups and trailers. You must show proof of residency, such as utility bill or driver's license, to claim your free compost and chips.
2010 Schedule
The fall dates for the 2010 compost and wood chip giveaway are every Wednesday and Thursday from September 8 through September 30 between the hours of 3:30-5 p.m. and Saturday, September 11 from 7 a.m. to noon. Each household qualifies for one free yard of compost and one free yard of wood chips.
The compost and wood chips are located west of the Household Hazardous Waste facility, 606 43 1/2 St. N. The small pile of compost that you can access to fill your own bags or cans is located next to the scale house at the landfill, 4501 7th Ave. N.
Purchasing compost and wood chips
Before and after the free giveaway, you can purchase compost and wood chips from the city. Wood chips cost $8 per yard; compost is $10/yard. To inquire about availability of materials, please call the landfill scale house at 701-282-2489.
