Beginning Monday, April 1, the Fargo Fire Department will be accepting applications to fill open firefighter positions. The application process will be open through Friday, April 12, after which the FFD will interview and evaluate qualified applicants.

“If you have ever dreamed of becoming a firefighter, now is the time to seize an excellent opportunity with a world-class department. We encourage women and men from all backgrounds to apply,” stated Fargo Fire Chief Steve Dirksen. “If you love working with a team and learning new skills every day, we want you to join the Fargo Fire Department.”

Newly hired firefighters will receive a starting annual salary of $56,172 and will be eligible for a comprehensive benefits package beginning on the first day of training. No prior firefighting experience is required to apply. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and meet the following minimum requirements in order to apply:

• Possess a valid driver's license
• Received a high school diploma or GED
• Be of sound mental and physical health
• Have the ability to understand English when written or spoken

Newly hired firefighters will take part in the Joint Fire Academy, which is operated by the Fargo and West Fargo Fire Departments. Throughout the 16-week academy, recruits will complete classroom work, skill development drills, ride-alongs and live burn scenarios. They will experience hands-on training in a controlled environment and learn techniques to prepare for real-life emergencies. During the academy, recruits will earn firefighter and EMT certifications.
